Breweries and LocAle
This map shows breweries within roughly 50 miles of Tendring (Essex, Suffolk, and some parts of inland counties). Please let us know of any that we have missed, or that have moved or closed.
For LocAle information, see below the map.
LocAle
CAMRA’s LocAle initiative promotes pubs stocking locally brewed real ale in order to reduce the number of ‘beer miles’ from brewery to pub cellar in response to growing consumer demand for quality local produce.
Each branch is free to determine their own definition of local – CAMRA’s guideline is a 30 mile radius around a pub. Because Tendring is on a peninsula, so much of such a radius would be off the coast, we opted for 40 miles shortest road distance.

Currently the method we use to determine the beer miles between brewery and pub is to use https://graphhopper.com/maps/?profile=car with a custom routing profile which treats all roads as having a 1 mile per hour speed limit.
{
"speed": [
{
"if": "true",
"limit_to": "1"
}
]
}
Just in case there are any one-way systems that might make a difference to the route, we calculate the distance FROM the brewery TO the pub.
This example (without accurately checking the start and end points, which were chosen by Graphhopper when I typed in the brewery name and the pub name) shows the distance from Greene King Brewery to the New Bell Inn, Harwich is about 42.7 miles, so they are too far away for their beers to count as LocAle for that pub. Use the Settings option to switch from the default units of km to miles.
It is also possible to get an approximate idea of whether a brewery’s beers count towards LocAle using isochrones – lines that show a 40 mile travel distance from the brewery. Unfortunately this website (example based on Greene King – wait for it to calculate the distances after loading) rounds to the nearest km behind the scenes so if things are borderline the distance will need checking as described above.
